FilmCAN - Major Opportunity for Students PDF Print E-mail
When I went to school I had a big penchant to write stories and make comic books; and when my school introduced a video productions class I was pretty pumped. It was a great learning opportunity and I got to make some video's that I thought were pretty cool, but only my class and future classes would see.

Now helping with this years Film Festival, I've been learning about their program FilmCAN and I absolutely think it's awesome and firmly beilieve it is something that students should make the most of. Students get to take advantage of an industry expert that can help with suggestions, feedback and can even facilitate in finding props or locations. The deadline is just over a month away, so if you haven't started planning, do so now; and make something creative. Shoot your movie with any old camcorder, or even a digital camera with record mode, post it online, and let people see it. You don't need fancy equipment to make a good short movie.

People will then vote on their favourites online and judges will select from the top choices their favourite to win either an iMac, equipped with Final Cut Express from Soho Computers or a Sony HDRCX100R Handicam from Sony Style. And maybe even more importantly, your short film will be screened along with one of the festival's feature lengths.

Getting screened at an International Film Festival while still in school can't exactly be a bad start to getting you started in the most creative and exhilarating business of all; show.

Rules and current submissions (as of now, just 4) can be found on the FilmCAN's Vimeo group. There's a video that shows how to upload your video, as well as one to help with basic lighting concepts. If you check out the FilmCAN section of our website there's some more links helpful to new filmmakers.

I hope to see many students at least take a shot at it. Worst thing that happens is you get great experience making your first short film and get some useful feedback from the pros. Best thing that could happen is you get an awesome prize and screened at an International Film Festival en route to becoming the next superstar Director.
