The Victoria Film Festival has teamed up with the historic Fairmont Empress to offer our out of town guests a great package deal for the 2010 Festival.
The Fairmont Empress has a grand history. Opened in 1908, The Empress continues to be the heart and soul of Victoria.
Receiving the commission after winning an architectrual competition to design Victoria's legislative buildings, architect Francis Rattenbury was tasked with building a unique structure for the CPR in 1904. The completed structure has seen many additions over the years, including a new lobby entrance that reflects the charm of the original design.
The Empress was such a famous landmark that for many years no sign graced it's door. On the day workers raised The Empress sign, an irate gentleman stated, "Anyone who doesn't know this is The Empress shouldn't be staying here."
The hotel remains a major catalyst for Victoria's popularity as a holiday destination but In 1965, there was much debate over whether it should be torn down to make room for a more modern, functional high-rise hotel. One local newspaper warned that, 'Without this splendid relic of the Edwardian era, literally tens of thousands of tourists will never return. This is the Mecca, this is the heart and soul of the city.' Instead of demolition, the city embarked on a $4 million campaign of renovation and refurbishment, playfully dubbed 'Operation Teacup.'
Throughout, The Empress has played hostess to kings, queens, dignitaries, and movie stars. In the 1930's, Shirley Temple arrived with her parents amid rumours that she was fleeing California due to kidnapping threats. Two huge bodyguards took the room opposite hers and always left their door open. I'd hate to see what modern day papparazi would've done with that one.
With normal rates being $199 and up just for the room, the festival package rate of $169 for 1 night's accommodation for 2 people is a deal, but add on 2 film festival tickets for each night booked, full English breakfast, and a complimentary cocktail at the festival lounge it quickly turns into a treat you can't miss. Alternatively, if the package doesn't suit your needs, you can get room only for just $119.
